Where to find commercial art galleries, Sydney contemporary prints and photography, leading and emerging Australian artists and modern art for sale.
Wandering around art galleries in places you visit is always interesting.
And buying an artwork – be it painting, print, sculpture or photograph – is one of the best ways of instantly transporting yourself back to your holiday once you’re home again.
Sydney is jam-packed with modern contemporary art. So where do you start? You do have a few other things to do on your vacation as well.
Weekend editions of the Sydney Morning Herald will give you an overview of the major galleries and the blockbuster exhibitions.
But to get the nuts and bolts of what’s on in Sydney in the art world you need the Art Almanac, a comprehensive Australian art gallery guide which pretty much covers everything that happens in the Sydney art world.
It’s available in galleries, good bookshops and the better news agencies. I encourage you to buy it for lots of additional information about Australian art, artists and contemporary art shows across the country.
Or go online for listings of exhibitions in Sydney galleries with modern art for sale. It’s a great place to start.
Use the Art Almanac to direct your wandering when you’re looking for your contemporary art fix.
If you go to the Paddington Markets on Saturdays (popular modern art for sale – gifts maybe?) you’re practically next door to the Australian Centre for Photography.
Open 1000-1800 (10am-6pm) weekends, entry is free. And round every Paddington corner you’ll find more galleries.
Contemporary Art Shows
The Biennale of Sydney is the biggest of Sydney’s contemporary art shows. The art’s not usually for sale, of course (well, not directly) and nor is it local.
There are not many quality contemporary Australian art shows. The Art Almanac will list any that are on. They’re held at irregular intervals.
The biggest is Art Month in March – a festival of modern contemporary art which includes galleries and artists from all around Sydney.
Aboriginal Art Galleries Sydney
You’ll find Aboriginal art galleries right throughout Sydney, but be aware that there are many rip-off merchants among the legitimate sellers. Protect yourself by checking out these guidelines for buying contemporary Aboriginal art.
Like other countries we grapple with issues arising from our colonial past.
Today we face internationally shared issues of exploitation in its myriad forms.
And we deal with the fallout from war, terrorism and violence generally.
We don’t all agree on what we should be doing and in its art galleries Sydney reflects these concerns and tests the boundaries. If ‘decorative’ doesn’t appeal, you’ll find it relatively easy to find ‘challenging’ modern art for sale.
