Airline luggage weight restrictions on full service domestic travel in Australia. Here are the airline luggage regulations on Qantas and Virgin domestic flights. Also carry on rules and some travel tips for packing luggage for Sydney.
On all air travel in Australia, regardless of airline and ticket cost, the maximum weight for any one piece of checked luggage is 32 kg (70 lb).
This is an occupational health and safety requirement imposed by law. Heavier items are shipped to Sydney as freight. Limited exceptions apply to mobility equipment.
For travel in Australia on budget airlines with no free baggage allowance, if you’re flying with infants, carrying sports equipment to Sydney or have mobility aids, see travelling with special needs.
Airline Luggage Weight – Domestic Flights
Domestic travel is defined as travel not combined with any international flights on the same ticket. Both airlines have a ‘per piece’ system, coupled with a weight restriction.
Children receive the same airline luggage weight as adults PLUS you can check in a collapsible pram, stroller or push chair, or a car seat, on top of their normal baggage allowance.
Basic luggage allowances are 23 kg. If you’re travelling business class, or you fit into a specified frequent flier or similar program this goes up to 32 kg.
Under some circumstances you can take more than one bag. Check your ticket for baggage allowance details.
Both airlines allow you to purchase extra kgs or bags, but this must be done in advance.
Carry On Baggage
There’s a significant difference between Qantas and Virgin in airline carry on baggage restrictions.
Both let you take two smaller bags (maximum 105 cm, or 41 inches) such as a briefcase and a laptop, or one slightly larger bag ( maximum 115 cm, or 45 inches) and a garment bag.
Virgin, allows 7 kg in total for all pieces of carry on baggage.
Qantas allows 7 kg per piece.
Travel Packing Tips
If you’re travelling to Sydney with Qantas, take advantage of its generous carry on baggage allowances.
You can take two bags on board, each weighing 7kgs.
Just be aware that you can take only one standard American or European 115 cm (45 inch) cabin bag. The two bag allowance is limited to slightly smaller bags of 105 cm (41 inch) each.
If you’re using more than one carrier in your travels around Australia, limit your packing. Bags should not exceed the lowest airline luggage weight and dimensions allowed.
