On Tuesday evenings the pretentiously titled but very interesting Australian Museum in Sydney,
largely funded by the New South Wales state government, becomes Jurassic Lounge.

Activities include artists, musicians, sometimes a lecture by a well-known scientist.

A limited range of food and beverages is available and, for a $15 entrance fee, visitors can roam the halls, glass of wine in hand.

Taking photographs is encouraged, and visitors can post them on the museum's facebook wall, www.facebook.com/australianmuseum

We went last Tuesday evening. It makes for a great night out. Web site is at http://australianmuseum.net.au/

Elle adds some housekeeping details:

The Australian Museum is at 6 College Street, on the corner of William Street and opposite Hyde Park. It's open every day except Christmas from 0930-1700 (9am-5pm).

Jurassic Lounge is a pop-up performance space operating during the summer only (February to April in 2011), from 1730-2130 (5.30pm-9.30pm).

Worth visiting even without the Jurassic Lounge
by: Elle

I love some of the rather weird animals there, especially the megafauna that used to roam Australia. Meeting some of those would be truly scary, especially with only a spear and a boomerang.

And it has a really interesting display of the way our earth has changed from the time of the big bang to now.

So even though Jurassic Lounge is over for the summer (let's hope it comes back next year) the Australian Museum is definitely worth a visit.

I think they're upping their game, too, making it much more interactive and interesting than it used to be.
