You're coming to Sydney; you love playing golf but your budget's tight.

Tthere are lots of great golf clubs and courses to play and places to stay that won't break the bank.

On this page I'm focusing more (but not exclusively) on 9 hole courses, looking for games that will challenge you without taking up your whole day.

There are more 18 hole courses here.

Here's the single most important tip: play during the week.   Golf is popular in Sydney and weekend games will be slower, courses will be more crowded and costs will be higher.

Best Sydney Municipal Golf Courses

It may not be the top course in Sydney, but you really have to include it - Bondi Golf Club puts you right above iconic Bondi Beach - and it'll challenge your golfing skills as well.

With only 9 holes this old style links course plays to your short game strengths. It has one Par 4 and eight Par 3s.

Winds provide unpredictability, and never lose sight of the fact that the course record is 4 under Par. It's a tough one.

It is also an ancient aboriginal whale watching spot.

You can still see stone carvings on the rocks at the 5th hole, facing outwards towards the Pacific Ocean.

Anywhere in Sydney really, but why not stay around Bondi?

Combine your cheap golf vacation with a surf, swim or walk as you prefer.

Or continue to soak up the great views from the clubhouse after your game.

Getting there
The 380 and 389 buses (plus the peak period X89) go right past the course. The 381, 382, the prepay only 333, and the peak period X84 stop at North Bondi terminus. The course is a very short walk from there. You can take these buses from downtown Sydney or join them at the Bondi Junction bus rail interchange if you're training in from other parts of the city.

Great Golf Course Discounts

There are four sand belt courses in Sydney's eastern suburbs. they include three of Sydney's most prestigious private courses - The Australian, The Lakes and Bonnie Doon.

The fourth, nestled among them, is Eastlake Golf Club, open to visiting golfers.

Set in the Botany wetlands only minutes from the city, Eastlake is a championship course, hosting qualifying events for the Australian and NSW Opens; not a course you'd generally think of for cheap golf vacations. What about 18 holes for AUD$20?   Read on!

Between Sydney and the airport

There is 7 day a week public access; bookings are essential.

Where to stay
Anywhere in the city, inner west or eastern suburbs.

Airport hotels are fine too. The course is about half way between the city and the airport.

Getting there
Take the (pre-paid) 343 bus from the city to Gardeners Rd, near Leonard Avenue.

From there it's a stroll of less than 200m to the golf course.

The (pre-paid) L94 bus will also get you close, but it's an 800m walk from the bus stop.

Buy pre-paid bus tickets from outlets all over Sydney. You'll see little flags outside saying something like 'Bus tickets sold here'. Most newsagents and tobacconists will have them. They're good for cheap golf vacations as they save you both time and money.

Coastal Discount Golf Courses

Balgowlah Golf Club is another little known but great course. Close to Manly Beach, you can add a swim or snorkel to augment your chap golf vacation.

It's another 9-holer, considered to be one of the best public golf courses in the state.

Consistently good course conditions make it a pleasure to play on at any time of the year.

The course is mostly Par 4s, with only 3 Par 3s. No Par 5s.

It's a relatively tight layout with good variation on holes. The greens are very fast.

Where to stay
You can stay in Manly which puts you within minutes of the course. There's a selection of hotels and hostels for cheap golf vacations . Or choose a city location and take the ferry over.

Getting there
From Manly take bus 143 or 144. The trip will take you 16 minutes. There's 150 metres to walk from the stop to the golf course.

It's no trouble to get to Balgowlah from the city either. You can take the ferry to Manly, passing by the Sydney Opera House and harbour bridge and then bus from there. Buses depart from Stand D in Belgrave Street, just down from the ferry wharf.

Or you can catch a bus directly from the city. Any 178, 179 or 180 bus will drop you about 120 metres from the course, the 169 bus drops you about 600 metres away.

Blue Mountains Golf Travel Package

For cheap golf vacations in the Blue Mountains, try the Grose River Golf Course at the foot of the Mountains. It's one that even many Sydney golfers don't know about.

This is a 9 hole course, well designed for the beginner but with elevation changes that provide the more serious golfer with interesting hole management issues.

Tee time, any time, especially mid-week

The 225 metre 5th hole is considered to be an excellent and challenging short par 4.

Mid week rounds are highly likely to be without any wait at all.

Weekends, while busier, still won't have you kicking your heels for too long, especially in the afternoons.

The surroundings are sylvan. You'll hear and see birds of all sorts and the mountains are always beautiful.

Where to stay
Cheap golf vacations can combine with a stay in Parramatta, Sydney's other half. Have a look at Old Government House, the oldest public building in Sydney. Some say it's haunted. Take the Rivercat for a trip through the mangroves up the Parramatta River. And Parramatta has good restaurants too.

Getting there
From Sydney or Parramatta take the North Shore and Western Line to Richmond. From Richmond it's best to take a cab - the 680 bus is the closest public transport option, but still leaves you some 3kms to walk.
